Something that we identified very early in the establishment of this initiative was a desire to make resources that work for teachers. I didn't want to create resources that were difficult to use, required a lesson plan overhaul to be incorporated, or generally didn't fit into differing classroom environments and dynamics. I started asking teachers early on: "what outcomes and indicators do you find difficult to demonstrate, are challenging for students to engage with, and/or you find inaccessible in terms of experiences?"
Biotechnology has consistently been identified as a topic difficult to approach and explore from within the classroom - field trips aren't always a possibility.
The purpose of this blog is to address some of the mystery surrounding biotechnology in environmental, sustainability, and climate sciences. In this forum-style blog, we will be interviewing people in these fields who work in Industry, Acadamia, and Government streams with the intention of breaking down the complexity and mystery that surrounds what they do, why they do it, and the technology that helps them get the job done.
There will be opportunities to weigh in on the direction this forum takes - we will do our best to incorporate student directive into deciding who to interview, setting a question list, and ultimately strive to provide a semi-interactive platform for students to take advantage of if they so choose.
